Janys Hayes, is a theatre director, actor and teacher of acting. She trained at the Drama Centre in London, under the tutelage of Yat Malmgren. She is Australia’s expert in Yat Malmgren’s acting technique of Character Analysis, a technique which has propelled such performers as Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins, Colin Firth, Michael Fassbinder and Tom Hardy into international stardom. Yat Malmgren’s technique is now taught at major English actor training schools including the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and Drama Centre.
Janys Hayes has taught Yat Malmgren’s Character Analysis at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA), The Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), the Actors’ Centre Sydney, the University of Wollongong, Ho Chi Minh Theatre, Hue International Arts Festival and Hanoi International Festival of Experimental Theatre. Janys has trained such actors as Clare Bowen, Stef Dawson, Hugh Sexton, Jackson Raine and Angus McGruther.
Janys Hayes’ book ‘The Knowing Body: Yat Malmgren’s Acting Technique’, has sold both nationally and internationally. Janys Hayes’ teaching allows actors to refine their work through precise acting choices based on the concept of the actor’s body revealing the perceived reality of any performed character.
Janys Hayes is currently the Secretary for the Australasian Association for Theatre, Drama and Performance Studies. She has produced works by Dorothy Hewitt, Dario Fo, Duong le Quy and Younghee Park and an opera by Jeff Galea. Her intercultural collaborations include productions for Belvoir Street Theatre, REM Theatre, Sydney Fringe Festival, Hanoi International Festival of Experimental Theatre and the Sadari Theatre Company from Seoul. As an actor, she has worked with the Melbourne Theatre Co., Theatre South, Hunter Valley Theatre Co., Freewheels, Salamanca Theatre and Critical Mass Theatre.
